What is Solar Heated Water?
Understanding Solar Heated Household Water
As the most dependable source of energy on the planet, the sun provides an excellent home energy solution. Many households are now using solar thermal panels to heat their homes’ water supplies, finding that solar power is an efficient, reliable way to use the sun’s powerful energy to reduce both heating bills and environmental damage. In the most straightforward sense, a solar heated hot water system harnesses the radiant energy from sunlight and transfers it to a storage tank of water that is connected to a home’s current water system.
Two kinds of systems use solar thermal panels to provide a household with enough hot water to satisfy its needs. These systems require very little maintenance and have life spans of up to 20 years. By understanding the difference between direct and indirect systems, people can make the best decisions about the type of structure that is right for their homes. Direct solar thermal systems rely on the sun to directly heat the water, while indirect systems rely on pipes that absorb warmth to indirectly heat the water. Choosing a solar thermal system is dependent on a home’s regional temperatures.
Direct solar water heaters are best in areas with little danger of temperatures dropping below the freezing point. A direct solar thermal system uses an insulated tank of water with collector pipes. The sun directly heats the water in the collector pipes, and this water flows in the storage tank for use in the household. Direct systems are the most efficient. Although they require little maintenance, any mineral deposits that may build up inside the pipes will have to be cleaned.
An indirect system involves a water tank with a network of heat pipes that run from the outside of the tank to the inside of the tank. The heat pipes are filled with a fluid that can withstand subzero temperatures, which is best for locations that experience below-freezing temperatures. The heat pipes on the outside of the tank collect the sun’s radiant heat, which warms the fluid inside the pipes. The warmed fluid flows through the pipes, and the heat is absorbed by water.
As the sun is the most sustainable and cleanest of all energy sources, a solar heated hot water system provides many benefits to homeowners. In addition to saving on energy costs and helping the environment, solar heated hot water systems offer excellent performance with low maintenance.
